Let’s Own the Scene

1. Let’s Own the Scene
I wanted this CD to have an short intro to ease listeners into the first song. I used this soundclip to introduce my live shows back in 2004. There is a full version of this song in existence, which I may release later if there’s any demand.

2. (You’re A) Pink Skirt

This song is about girls who go to shows and act shy or nerdy to pick up guys. The chorus talks about how guys are attracted to them because they look out of place or uncomfortable. I chose the line “Like a pink skirt on a little boy” because I wanted to convey the idea that the clothes someone wears can make them appear to be a totally different person, much the same way a pink skirt would make a little boy look like a little girl.

3. Gabber Died Twelve Years Ago

Did I really write a song about ravers and how they eventually had to grow up? I did! It seems that an entire subculture that denied the benefits of maturity suddenly matured, gave up their kandy bracelets and compromised overnight. Also: Gabber is a sub-genre of Techno that, I think, is pretty awesome. Sadly, it never went anywhere.

4. U-Turn USA

I really hate going to shows on election years because all everyone talks about is politics. I wanted to make a song that sounded political but was essentially shallow. So that’s why we have a song urging the USA to ‘turn around’ so we can have hot guys and cool clubs

5. (We’ve Had) All The Best Parties
I wanted to point out that the people who are most involved in the scene always act like they despise it and want no part of it. I also felt betrayed by movies like Party Monster that show the gay club scene as this fantasy world, when really it’s just a bunch of crabby ol’ queers judging each other. As you’ve gathered, this song is pretty critical. However, it’s one of my favorite tracks, both musically and lyrically.

6. (Your dad bought you a new) Baseball Cap (and you feel obligated to wear it whenever he’s around)
This is a fun song that always goes over well live.
